Studies prove that regular physical activity is essential for good health. In addition to obvious fitness benefits including lowering risk of diabetes and heart disease, daily exercise is a simple, proven way to help tension dissipate. According to ancient philosophies, all illness is related to stress. Modern western medicine agrees.
In fact, stress accounts for some 60-90% of doctor's visits according to Herbert Benson, MD, of Harvard Medical School's Mind/Body Medical Institute.
The good news: anything that increases movement is beneficial: walking, dancing, cycling, jumping rope. Walking is the "nearest activity to perfect exercise" (Source: Morris and Hardman 1997). Don't over-complicate it, just take a hike. It's free, it's green and it requires no special equipment. Just 30 minutes five days a week will improve your physical and mental well-being.
Fitness improves academic achievement, according to a study by the California Department of Education. And other research has confirmed that exercise encourages new brain cell development. And we applaud groups like the No Child Left Inside Coalition, created in 2006 to find new ways to encourage kids to experience nature and learn about the environment.
